lris Constitutions

Introduction

Before the iris is observed in detail we need to look at the whole picture. We
need to take into account the iris colour, shape and fibre patterns. A great deal of information can be gained by simply looking at the colour of the iris.

Iris Colour

There are only two true genetic iris colours, blue and brown. Iris colour can normally be determined with the naked eye, no iris magnification is required. However, if the iris contains a lot of surface pigment an iris loupe and torch may be required. When magnifying irises that appear green or hazel to the naked eye, it becomes apparent that there are both blue and brown fibres showing. This type of iris is classified as a mixed iris.

The iris colour mainly depends on the pigmentation on the front surface of the iris structure. The more pigmentation the more brown the iris appears since the middle iris layer is hidden. If there is little or no pigmentation of the front surface the scattering of light in the middle layer gives the eye a blue appearance. A complete absence of pigment will give the iris a pink colour, this is due to the reflection of the vascular tissues in the back of the eye. Pink eyes are very rare and can be found in albinos, who are people with pigmentation deficiency and have white hair and extremely pale skin.

In genetics, iris colour is hereditary just as other characteristics are, such as hair colour, bone structure etc. A persons iris colour is dependent on the iris colour of their parents and grandparents etc. Brown is the more dominant colour and blue is recessive. This means a parent with brown eyes and a parent with blue eyes are more likely to produce a brown-eyed child, although this is not always the case!

The first step when learning iridology is to understand the iris constitutions.
Although the iris is unique to each individual, it is possible to group most irises according to colour and sometimes structure. Each category of colour and structure carries its own, unique predisposition to disease patterns. By taking time to fully understand constitutional groups, you will easily grasp the basic principles of iridology. Simply identifying the iris constitution can often make a useful iris analysis.
